The current Curriculum is Godspace.

The prior Curriculum for year 5/6 Scripture at Pagewood Primary school has been developed and refined over the years by Neil Brown.

The curriculum covers two years of 4 terms each, though 1st and 4th term are usually shorter than the others and sometimes the unit for one term will continue into the next.

Where possible we learn some simple songs.  A recurring song used whenever convenient is to the tune of "Was a farmer had a dog and bingo was his name-oh".
There are various version:

  • God gave us his only son and Jesus is his name-oh.  J E S U S .... and Jesus is his name-oh
  • God gave us a special book the bible's what we call it, B I  B L E .... the bible's what we call it
  • God gave us a way to live and  faith is what we call it, F A I T H .... and  faith is what we call it.
The key word is written on the board and each time through another letter is removed or crossed out.  For those letters we clap instead of sing, so the last time through there are 5 claps, no letters.

Deuteronomy 11: 18-19: Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads: teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Even Years

Term 1: The life of Jesus

This unit focuses on getting to know Jesus the person.  It covers important events in his life from birth to death and resurrection, and highlights the important aspects of his ministry including teaching, healing, and miracles.  Scripture passages are mostly from Matthew and Luke.

A recurring question is "What does this teach us about Jesus and what he was like?"

At the same time we learn the names of the books of the new testament in song.

Term 2: The Acts of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church.

We continue the historical sequence and look at the growth of the early church as described in the book of Acts.  Various key events in the lives of various key apostles are reviewed, frequently using sections from the "Visual Bible - Acts" and "The Visual Bible for Kids".

The theme is "Jesus is changing me" and we focus in each event on the change that is happening in individual people or in the church.

We learn the song "Jesus is Changing me" and talk about  what that means.

Term 3: The beginning

We dip into the Old Testament to learn how God was preparing a people long before Jesus came along.

Creation, The  Fall, The Flood,  The call of Abraham, and Gideon's victory all show us the how God works.

The recurring theme is that God is in control and we learn the song "Nothing Takes God by Surprise" by Colin Buchanan.

Term 4: The Christian Experience

What does it mean to be a Christian?  We talk about Faith, Church, Prayer, Worship, and Bible reading.

In the last week we talk about the act of becoming a Christian, of choosing to follow.  The students have an opportunity to prayer  a prayer of repentance and submission.

Odd Years

Term 1: Tanglewood's Secret

"Tanglewood's Secret" is a story about two young children living with their Aunt, facing various life issues, and getting to know Jesus.  We watch the video production of the story as a series of 7 episodes following Ruth, Philip and Terry as they learn, grow, and suffer together.

Term 2: Parables

Much of Jesus' teaching is in the form of parables.  This term we learn what a parable is and learn many of the parables through acting out simple skits based on the various parables.  The focus is on looking behind the story to understand the meaning.

Depending on time available we might do some other skits, such as the temptation in Eden, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and "Down by the Lake" from John 21.

Term 3: The Miracles in John's Gospel

Every child is given a copy of John's  gospel and  is encouraged to read it.  Each week we look at a different miracle as reported by John and talk about the process, the difficulties, and the rewards of reading the bible for ourselves.

Term 4:  How to be a Christian (conceptually similar to Term 4 in even years, but different material)

Topics covered include: the Lord's Prayer, and the 4 prayer groups; Parts of the Body and the "one another's"; the 3 legs of the Christian Walk (Prayer, Bible, Fellowship).

In the last week we talk about the act of becoming a Christian, of choosing to follow.  The students have an opportunity to pray a prayer of repentance and submission.
